Gutenburg – The new WordPress editor

A new WordPress content editor is currently under development which will be in action with the next major release of WordPress, 5.0. The aim of the new editor is to make adding rich content to your WordPress website hassle-free and enjoyable.

In the meantime, WordPress have released a classic editor plugin that can be installed and activated for people who aren’t ready to make the switch.

The creators of the Gutenberg editor claim it will create an experience of media rich pages and posts. It will also give developers the flexibility of drag and drop blocks which are also reusable. Gutenburg is developed on GitHub using WordPress REST API, JavaScript and React.

The main feature of Gutenberg will be Blocks, a content-first approach to website development.

Blocks will allow users to;

  • Build engaging content by creating modern, multimedia-heavy layouts
  • Insert, rearrange and style multimedia content with little technical knowledge
  • Instead of using custom code, you can add a block and focus on your content

Blocks included as standard will be:

“The web up until this point has been confined to some sort of rectangular screen. But that is not how it’s going to be. Gutenberg has the potential of moving us into the next time.”Morten Rand-Hendriksen, Web Designer and Developer

We’re looking forward to seeing how the new editor helps people make the most of their website content. Do you think Gutenburg will be the next revolutionary addition to WordPress?
